Disclaimer: The following article isn’t a tool comparison. I am sure that each tool has its own use case, and for some teams, Trello works really well. But this is about why we switched…

Background

End of last year (2020), we started with a small team of technical and non-technical people to work on an application to simplify compliance for websites like imprint, data privacy policy,…. So, in the beginning, there were only rough ideas of what features do we really need and how we would like to present them. And also, we never aligned the “how we work together” because we haven’t spoken about it who will do what, what do we need to start with the coding part, and so on.

So we started with workshops, coding sessions, and Figma to have the first visual drafts of the application and discuss ideas and features.

Based on Figma, we start coding with a kind of to-do list in Trello. But over time, it got a little bit messy with many tickets, and it was not clear what to do next. So we switched from Trello to Jira.

In the following, I will outline why Jira was a big step for the team and why Trello was not the right tool for us.

Why we switched from Trello to Jira?
